Preclinical research

An early step in the drug development process in which investigators evaluate the drug to identify dosing and toxicity levels. The two types of preclinical research are in vitro and in vivo laboratory animal testing.  After preclinical testing, researchers review their findings and decide whether the drug should be tested in people.
