Embryonic Stem Cell Research Oversight (ESCRO) Committee

UNC-Chapel Hill oversight body that reviews all research involving human embryonic stem cells. In compliance with national standards, this committee ensures that the research is ethical, scientifically sound, and necessary. It contains members with expertise in all aspects of the biological and biomedical sciences necessary to understand and evaluate potential uses of human embryonic stem cells. It also contains members of the community and other members who may represent interests such as medical ethics, law, theology, or serve as patient advocates. ESCRO review is in addition to and in coordination with the requirements for other regulatory reviews (e.g., Institutional Review Board (IRB), Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)).
