Compensation

« Back to Glossary Index

Also referred to as payment, reimbursement, or remuneration, compensation is primarily a means to offset inconvenience, travel expenses and/or lost revenue due to participation in a research project; however, it may be structured to serve as a recruitment incentive as well. Compensation for participation is not considered a research benefit. Regardless of the form of remuneration, investigators must take care to avoid unduly influencing subjects. The amount of compensation must be proportional to the time and inconveniences posed by participation in the study. Note: Compensation also refers to payments or treatments provided for research-related injury.
